Becoming a Chorister

Learning to sing in a choir offers a boy or girl an array of life skills. Children learn to perform to a high level, work as a team, develop self-discipline, vocal ability and quite often form life-long friendships.

The Director of Music, Richard Dacey is always pleased to meet prospective choristers (aged 8-14yrs) and their parents at any time during the year. The short auditions are very informal and usually include nothing more challenging than singing the national anthem. It is important for parents to remember that we are looking for potential rather than the finished article.

St Martin’s choir follows the The Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) Voice for Life training scheme. As well as the training they receive through choir practices, choristers have a weekly training session that enables them to progress through the different coloured medal ribbons. When choristers sucessfully gain an award they will get to take part in large choral events at Guildford Cathedral.

How to join

Medal Training

" Singing with all of my friends is the highlight of my week!"

Being a chorister means you are part of a team of musicians providing music for the church’s year. You will get to take part in fantastic festivals like Nine Lessons and Carols and beautiful services throughout Holy Week. You will also receive singing tuition during the weekly rehearsals from the trained music staff in the Music Department.

The choristers at St Martin’s get to take part in social events, which have included ice-skating at Hampton Court Palace, bowling and make your own pizza evenings. Unlike most youth clubs there is no membership fee. In fact, you will even get paid for attending services!
